A Top Industrial Designer Insights On The Future Of The Connected Home
Yves Béhar has created some of the most attractive smart-home devices on the market as the founder of fuseproject, the San Francisco–based design and branding firm he established in 1999. More recently, Béhar co-founded the next generation home entry system August.
Let’s take a look at what he says about connected devices. The famous designer has received dozens of awards, including for The Frame TV for Samsung and Bluetooth tracking device, Tile. He believes that the first thing we collectively need to do is to let go of the idea that smart home is created by adding smart devices to the house. Instead, it refers to the overall infrastructure of the house that works without human monitoring or interference.
Designers should create tech that makes the user experience wonderful and offer plenty of new functionalities. It should also seem more as infrastructure rather than as pieces of technology. He’s impressed with prefab and the way of designing smart houses with built-in smart tech instead of installations later on. Béhar believes that along with applying the tech to increase convenience and improve lifestyle, we should use it to make life more sustainable so that we can beat climate change and other issues. According to him, the smart home of the future would be completely sci-fi-like which can sense what you want and offer efficiency and sustainability hand in hand.
