Alarm.com vs Vivint – Smart Device Wars Continue As The Home Automation Market Grows
Alarm.com has prevailed in a patent dispute with Vivint following a federal appeals court decision that invalidates claims by Vivint on technology for remotely controlling home appliances using a smartphone.
The court has correctly discovered that one of Vivint’s many patents regarding infringement against Alarm.com was invalid.
Alarm.com has challenged many patents. The district court supported the infringement case pending the outcome. The stay was removed last year when Vivint accepted not to continue with claims on the patent. The Federal Circuit’s decision announces that Vivint’s patent talks about a way of letting the users remotely control devices, such as air conditioners, lighting fixtures, and refrigerators.
On appeal, the company argues that the PTAB wrongly interpreted the key claim term, deviating from the used term. The issue was whether the patent revealed the “terminal identifier” discovered in Vivint’s patent. This talks about a way for the home network to detect the remote device.
