Alexa Device Users Can Now Enjoy Free Spotify Services
Alexa-powered devices like Amazon Echo would now be able to play audio content from Spotify for no charges. Spotify announced this change earlier this week. Previously, only paid Spotify users were able to stream audio on Bose, Amazon, and Sonos devices using Alexa. The free version was only available for those devices that had Google Assistant support. While Apple has made it much easier to play Spotify music via Siri, the Apple HomePod did not make the list.
The free Spotify service comes with ads and lacks certain features like skipping unlimited songs, playing offline, and saving music. Despite this, the streaming service has a huge following. The free version of Spotify is currently only available to the new devices in the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
The support for Alexa devices comes hot on the heels of SiriusXM adding an archive of more than 10,000 hours of its shows to Alexa users this week. The update also includes personalized music stations through Pandora and the ability to sync across Alexa-powered devices.
Google Assistant integrated SiriusXM into Google Nest devices recently. Both virtual assistants have been integrated into multiple devices in the last few months. The fact that Amazon now supports the free version of Spotify makes it as attractive as a Nest Home device for the user. Since the market is mainly dominated by Google and Amazon, it is pretty apparent that Amazon wants to offer everything and more.
