Alexa, Google Assistant, And Now HomeKit Compatible! IKEA’s Smart Plugs Have Covered Their Bases And Are Ready For Your Smart Home.
Ikea recently released an update for its Tradfri smart plugs in the US. It will be rolled out all over soon, but the exact time of update is not yet ascertained. The new firmware released will allow the power accessories to be handled by other gadgets via the Home app or the HomeKit platform. The Tradfri smart plugs did not initially come with HomeKit support.
A firmware update released for the Gateway, the central hub Ikea’s smart home system uses to control all of the devices in the range, adds the extended functionality.
The smart plugs have a new design where they are quite large. However, they can be mounted so that they don’t block any sockets. While the plugs can be bought separately, they will need the Tradfri Gateway to work, a feature that other smart plugs with HomeKit support don’t need. It is quite expensive compared to the other models in the market. However, if you are looking to buy in bulk, the price is attractive. Ikea has come across issues providing HomeKit support in the past for its Tradfri lighting range. The company has plans to release HomeKit-ready Smart Shades in late 2019.
