Amazon May Be Winning The Smart Speaker Race But Trends Show That Google Is Quickly Closing That Gap
According to Voicebot.ai and Voicify, 26.2% of the U.S. adult population owns a smart speaker, with Amazon’s Echo leading the way with 61% share followed by Google Home at 24%. eMarketer, in 2018, reported that Echo was responsible for 67% of all sales while CIRP stated the figure as 70%.
While the numbers differ, one thing is clear. Amazon Echo is the leading smart speaker and preferred by most consumers. Voicebot’s report tells us that Google Home is swiftly gaining speed in the last few months.
Apart from the top three contestants, Sonos One has also been making the headlines. With built-in Alexa, Amazon may not be actually losing market shares.
After all, Amazon is selling its Echo devices at cost or even a loss to snag more market share. The real value over time will be in controlling the ecosystem.
A report by Juniper Research states that there will be over 8 billion digital voice assistants in another 4 years from 2.5 billion in 2018. The survey found that those who have a smart speaker tended to use their smartphone’s voice assistant more than those who didn’t. It looks like users are getting comfortable with using their voice assistants across various platforms.
