Anonymous Data Dumps Test Ties Between Privacy And Media
With the popularity of smart tech and gadgets increasing by the day, the privacy and security risks associated with it is also increasing. Anonymous information dumps made by hackers to journalists have become a source of controversy across the media industry, delegates at the Black Hat Europe security conference have heard.
The Paradise Papers is a data dump that covers over 13.4 million files of tax information of high net worth individuals. It was published without attribution on grounds of public interest.
Geoff White, a UK-based investigative journalist, did not agree to Julian Assange’s entreaty. The main concern here is that the entity behind this is not known. Anonymous data in huge quantities are dumped on journalists who are left to unravel it. Some hackers strategize more to ensure maximum damage is done. Panama Papers scandal is another example of this issue.
The slow drip of leaks reached a crescendo that triggered the resignation of the studio’s co-chair, Amy Pascal, said White.
Since data is already available to the public, major media entities cannot ignore it.
