Apple And Google Competition Has Amazon’s Smart Speakers Sales Slipping (say that 10 times real fast).
In 2014, Amazon ventured into the smart speaker market which gave it a good grip on the market. However, it looks like its shares are declining. Google managed to double its share in the first quarter while Apple also managed to snag a small victory with its HomePod. Alibaba and Xiaomi are a couple of the popular Chinese vendors who have entered the smart speaker market with a bang and have collected about 10% of the shipments.
Google is expected to rise to success thanks to its Assistant which supports 10 languages. There are reports that it will be supporting 30 languages by year end. Unfortunately, Amazon’s Alexa supports only 3.
Google’s advantage in terms of language support means developers can build voice apps in additional languages, amplifying the total number of voice apps available and the number of consumers engaging with them. Meanwhile, Amazon’s lack of extensive voice support will significantly limit its global reach.
Amazon Echo became highly popular thanks to its capability of smart home devices and voice control. This has led companies to release devices which contain integrate voice control into the smart home ecosystems.
