Apple And Google Competition Keeps Amazon Pushing Smart Home Development Forward
Amazon is preparing for competition from Apple and Google to retain its leadership position in smart home devices market with Alexa-powered digital home hub, cheaper Echo speaker and Echo Spot.
Though hardware products aren’t key to Amazon’s bottom line, they serve as important conduits for popularizing and expanding the Alexa voice-based digital assistant, which is integrated into the latest devices. As an e-commerce giant, Amazon aims to give consumers the ability to buy items on its website from any of their devices, and without its own smartphones, Alexa drives that effort.
Amazon’s Echo Spot is a mini speaker with 2.5 inch color screen which can stream audio and video content like music, weather, news, web videos, etc. Amazon has also launched new smart home device called the Echo Plus with better speaker and has in-built hub for connectivity and control of other home accessories. The new smaller Echo boasts of dedicated woofer and tweeter for sharper music and a new microphone for greater distance voice control.
Amazon’s long term strategy is to become one-stop-shop solution for its customers and has introduced revamped Fire TV set-top box with 4K resolution, speaker phone accessory Echo Connect and infotainment systems for BMW cars by mid-2018.
