Apple Doubling Down On Smart Home Efforts After Major Lag Behind Amazon And Google
Apple is hiring more resources to work on their smart home software so that they don’t lag so far behind in the smart home market.
The overhaul is designed to spur more outside accessory and appliance makers to connect smart-home products such as lights and garage doors with the iPhone and Apple’s voice-activated digital assistant, Siri.
Besides this, the company is also planning to build more smart devices. Lead by Silk Labs’ Andreas Gal and former Mozilla CTO, joined Apple last year. His company has come up with an AI platform that could connect IoT devices. The company is looking to hire about 15 resources, and many of them are from the IoT market.
In addition to having a larger portfolio of products, the company is coming up with ways to attract users to buy its products. With the launch of HomeKit in 2014, Apple officially entered the market. This allows users to connect to various devices and remotely control their homes. So far, virtual assistant Siri is only available in Apple devices, however, it can control third-party products via HomeKit. Unfortunately, the HomePod did not receive much attention due to its high price and tight ecosystem. Besides new smart devices, the company may also be planning to launch a new cloud storage feature for security cameras.
