Apple Quietly Acquires PullString, An AI Voice Startup, For A Cool 30 Million.
Apple has acquired PullString, an AI startup. The deal was made for at least $30 million. It is likely Apple bought PullString because of its specialization in AI, voice, IoT, and smart home assistants.
PullString was established in 2011 in San Francisco. It was previously known as ToyTalk. The company has already raised about $44.8 million through funding with investors like True Ventures, CRV, and Greylock Partners. They first started out creating voice applications for toys like Hello Barbie. Over the last few years, they shifted their focus to the smart home assistant market.
PullString also operates a cloud-based platform for the design and development of voice apps and conversational tools.
Their clients include the like of Mattel, Samsung, and Activision. The acquisition was made which could give Apple a fighting chance against Alexa, its main rival in this sector. If Apple is planning to work its way further into the smart home sector, this acquisition could be greatly beneficial. PullString is likely to work on Siri and improve its voice recognition features and overall abilities.
