Apple vs. Amazon In The Smart Home Race
Amazon is leading the home automation front with open ended platform and voice controlled digital assistant Alexa. Amazon customer base is online shoppers who are not dependent on a single platform or interface. Whereas Apple keeps its iPhone at the center of its customers’ with Homekit as its home automation architecture.
Amazon is pursuing an open-systems approach that allows quick development of many features, while Apple is taking a slower route, asserting more control over the technology in order to assure security and ease-of-use. Google, for its part, is investing heavily in both intelligent assistant software and home-automation devices like the Nest thermostats and, more recently, the Google Home speaker.
In comparison to the number of devices currently compatible with its platforms, Amazon’s Alexa has about 250 devices whereas Apple’s Homekit has about 100 devices compatible. The slow growth of Homekit is due to Apple’s control exertion over security and very slow certification process in comparison to Amazon. However, better user experience, better security and privacy, ease-of-use and faster set-up of devices provides an edge to Apple over Amazon. But the risk for Apple is the iPhone centric approach which limits the market share, which clearly is the benefit for Amazon with open-systems approach.
