Apple’s HomeKit May Have Been A Disappointment But That Might Be Changing With Partnerships And Better Product Integration
While the smart home has been in the making for a long time, it was in 2014 that the dream actually started coming true with the launch of Apple’s HomeKit and Amazon’s Alexa. Five years down the line, Alexa has sold over 100 million devices while HomeKit is stuck.
Maybe 2019 is Apple’s year with the company looking to integrate the Home app on over 1 billion smartphones globally. A major challenge Apple faced in the smart home sector was the fact that it couldn’t integrate with the hundreds of third-party suppliers out there. This step would have made helped develop more HomeKit-compatible products. Since Apple is not open to offering control of its UI, manufacturers stopped using the system altogether since it was too difficult to integrate HomeKit.
What seems to have caused Apple to finally open up to partners was the utter flop of the HomePod, the “smart” speaker that was supposed to be the hub a smart home could be built around.
The product was received with much excitement, but it died soon. It was also priced extravagantly. Alexa and Google Assistant, on the other hand, started working with thermostats, TVs, and other third-party devices. Apple is now offering iTunes and Apple AirPlay 2 support for Sony, Vizio, LG, and Samsung TVs. If Apple can increase the number of products compatible with HomeKit, it could get a much bigger market share in the smart home market.
