Ballie, Samsung’s Ball-Shaped Robot, Makes An Appearance At The CES
At the CES, Samsung unveiled its ball-shaped rolling robot that will work as your personal robot. Named Ballie, this cute robot will help out by turning on the TV, connecting to other smart home appliances, and cleaning up. It can also be considered to be a virtual pet. In fact, Samsung’s President and CEO of Consumer Electronics Division, HS Kim, addressed the robot like a much-loved pet.
Some are unsure just how useful this robot can be considering it cannot go up the stairs. Others are more concerned that a pet could use it as a chew toy and damage it. At this time, there is no word on when the device will make it to the market, if at all.
This innovation by Samsung does show that they are working on something more than request-and-response interactions.
Demonstrations of Ballie show it identifying problems in the home such as spilled food and a tipped over plant. In both cases, Ballie proactively called a robot vacuum or air purifying system to the location of the problem. There was no requirement for the homeowner to take action or even know an issue had taken place.
Ballie can also double as a fitness assistant and even as a security robot.
