Clap On, Clap Off! The Simple Smart Device That Introduced The Concept Of Home Automation.
The Clapper can turn on your coffee machine with just a clap. But there is not a whole lot of thing it can do. The X10 system was the earlier version of home automation which worked with a power-line-based communication protocol and remote controls. Though it had a lot of functionalities, it did not catch up because of its complexity.
Clapper, however, was a simple device which turned on electric current when the user made a particular sound. The way it was marketed impacted the device greatly as well. Clapper was manufactured by Joseph Enterprises, though they are more popular for their invention of Chia Pet.
The company sold other products, like the Scribe Ett engraving pen, the Ove Glove kitchen glove, and the Garden Weasel. Pedott, with his rep as a marketing expert, was pitched thousands of devices that he turned down. But it was The Clapper, with its catchy commercials and simple pitch, that broke through in a real way.
The Smart Clapper comes with a microchip and has two mode – Away and Home. It also has the ability to detect different kinds of claps. In spite of huge, complex systems available in the market, thanks to the basic marketing used, the consumers have fallen in love with its basic approach.
