Get Alexa Outta Your Dreams And Into Your Car. Amazon’s Strategy To Expand The Smart Home To Your Vehicle.
Amazon’s demo house at it Seattle headquarters now features a new room – a garage.
Inside the garage is a concept electric car—or, more specifically, the immobile insides of such a vehicle—that Amazon uses to show automakers the full spectrum of things its Alexa Auto software platform can do.
This includes tasks that Alexa can carry out, such as messaging, reminders, and audio streaming. It can also control the temperature in the car or roll up or down the windows based on verbal commands. After two years of efforts, Amazon is now hoping to persuade automakers to embed Alexa Auto into their products. It is not an easy task since most drivers use their smartphones to summon their virtual assistant. Apple and Google already have a similar product, but Amazon doesn’t have any OS to mirror in the car.
Alexa is designed to give information about autonomous-friendly roads, level of fuel, and more. The latest SDK will offer the control in-cabin lighting and turning on the defrost option. Alexa Auto does not provide door locking options, headlights, or ignition controls via voice. So far, Amazon has integration deals with BMW and Audi but admits that Alexa Auto is a work in progress. One reason that can hinder adoption is the fact that automakers would not be happy with such a high level of automation within their cars. If they were willing, Amazon could profit a lot from it. Amazon is working on a model which offers the automakers the freedom to mix Alexa functionalities with their brand’s unique features.
