“Hey Google” Smart Home Virtual Summit Reveals More Google Assistant Integration For Nest Devices
Looking at the new features in the “Hey Google” Smart Home Virtual Summit, it looks like Google is planning to create smart homes around the Google Assistant. With Android 11 operating system, smart home updates will gain a lot of visibility. Users would be able to choose whichever device controls they want to include in the menu and simply access Google Assistant-controlled devices in the power menu. The Google Assistant will also be able to automatically run different routines based on the people at home.
This was already a feature for Nest, but will now be an element of Google Assistant, relying on “presence detection” tech to decide whether to run the routines set up on devices for when everyone is away.
Most aspect of home life will be up for customized routines. The Smart Home for Entertainment Device (SHED) API will be available to anyone who wants to integrate Google Assistant into a device.
Michele Turner, Google Nest Director of Product and Smart Home Ecosystem, mentioned that they are prioritizing foundational features to allow users to access and manage their smart devices easily. With a lot of us spending more time at home, we are using these smart devices a lot. With entertainment devices getting a lot of attention, Google is focusing to target that area first. The new devices will also be compatible with Nest Aware subscription service and smart sensors. Google’s smart home efforts have doubled in the last few years. With deeper integration and compatibility with thousands of devices, the smart home picture is slowly coming together.
