How Apple Has Hurt Themselves In The Smart Home Race
Back in 2014, Apple had announced that they were developing a Homekit for the iOS devices. Many thought it would give them a step up in the smart home market. Even using only those devices which are compatible with Homekit, many will still face difficulties.
On the other hand, Amazon’s Alexa has established itself as a smart home hub, thanks to its ability to connect to third-party apps. Amazon has become popular in the market because its Echo series are not very expensive and is user-friendly. It is also easy for developers to build Alexa into their products, making it compatible.
Apple took a different approach, closing the HomeKit and Siri smart home controls off from the world. In the past, the company has had some success in controlling its technology and ensuring that the interface people interact with is up to Apple’s standards, but in this case, the strategy has limited the capabilities of both HomeKit and Siri in the smart home.
Apple plans to make iPhones or iPads the controlling feature in a Homekit powered smart home. Compatible accessories are needed now, such as thermostats, security cameras, lights, sensors, and garage doors. Using the right strategy, Apple could still dominate the smart home market.
