How Do Users Really Feel About Their Smart Devices? This Survey Might Shed Some Light
The result of a Pew survey indicates that many people prefer to be polite to humans and AI alike. Most smart speaker owners are under the age of 50, with 32% of them below 30. Some devices have come under the radar due to privacy issues.
In fact, in May of this year, child safety advocacy groups filed a complaint with the FTC out of concern that Amazon’s Echo Dot Kids was unlawfully collecting personal data from children.
Nearly 60% of the users don’t particularly care if personalization options were not expanded in the future. About 66% of the users didn’t want personalized service if it meant giving access to their personal data.
The research noted that about half the users were not comfortable with law enforcement agencies getting access to smart speaker audio recordings. The other half was okay with the same if it helped prevent serious crimes and terrorism. Regarding politeness, as many as 54% of the users tended to say “please” to their AI assistants. While 62% of the women tended to be more polite, only 45% of the men tended to say “please”.
