Insight, Foresight? Seven Of Ten Smart Home Predictions Since The 1980s Have Been Right.
Of the 150 predictions made with regards to smart homes, 7 out of 10 are possible and some are already implemented. Robot vacuums were received with a lot of enthusiasm, but users suggested that they are not as useful as they thought.
Smart tech in office space is a huge hit, especially with the introduction of remote access and cloud storage. Surprisingly, voice assistants didn’t score high on the “more useful than expected” option but collected slightly over 50% of votes on the “as useful as expected” option.
Researchers went through all sorts of materials to gather predictions made in the past and figured how much of it has come true. These were split into 8 categories, such as relaxing, security, cooking and chores. Utilities seem to be the most successful category so far. A prediction was classified as a fail if it is currently not practical.
For example, digital nomads (predicted in 1988), contactless payments (1995), job recruitment sites (1999), and cloud storage that’s available to all (2007) have all come true.
The research came to the conclusion that certain categories found more success because of fundamental technological innovations, such as wireless internet. As much as 64% of the predictions have been realized within the timeframe. Besides talking about the past predictions, the study also includes predictions for the future, energy-efficient homes being one of the most common ones.
