Introduction Of Project CHIP Is A Game Changer For Smart Devices, And Our Smart Homes
The smart world has been reaching greater heights ever since it became a thing. It has made life easier and simpler for all people whether be it switching off the lights or performing a series of tasks automatically. However, in today’s world, due to multiple devices being available in the ecosystem, people must choose one single provider such as Google, Amazon or Apple for their primary device. Soon, there is going to be a change in this scenario with the introduction to Project CHIP (Connected Home over IP).
Established by the Zigbee Alliance, it brings together Google, Amazon, Apple, and 170 other manufacturers to ensure that IoT devices are compatible regardless of their brand.
This project is projected to be a game changer in the upcoming years as this is a win-win situation for both the consumers and the device manufacturers. From a consumer’s perspective, they will no longer have to check the compatibility of the devices and it also gives them the flexibility to choose the best gadgets on the market regardless of their brand. From a manufactures point of view, this will supposedly lead to increased adoption of IoT gadgets. That means more consumers will be spending money in the space—regardless of which brand they choose.
The Project CHIP standard consists of three technologies. The first is Bluetooth Low-Energy for device setup. Secondly, CHIP dictates that devices use Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth applications. Perhaps the most important piece is the Thread mesh network protocol. This allows low-bandwidth devices like sensors to communicate with each other. Ensuring that all devices are compatible with Thread makes this possible. Another benefit for consumers is that Project CHIP devices will work with all major voice assistants. There have been speculations that Project CHIP devices will start rolling out later this year.
