Is Facebook Entering The Smart Home Race?
Facebook is reportedly going to launch 2 smart devices, with the code names “Aloha” and “Fiona”, in July. They will be made by LG and will have a 15-inch touchscreen. Since this news has been published by many media, there must be some truth in it. Initial reports suggest that one will be a speaker device while the other will be a smart speaker.
“Aloha” is the more sophisticated one and will have the name “Portal”. Along with music options and social networking capabilities, they also offer voice control, facial recognition, and video calling facilities.
The two units are reportedly being developed by Facebook’s “Building 8” lab, run by former Defense Department employee and Googler Regina Dugan. They are apparently being manufactured in Asia.
We are yet to find out whether these devices are going to act as smart home controllers. Aloha is likely to be priced higher than Fiona. Facebook has a great opportunity here to make a name for itself in a market that still has a long way to go.
