Latest Update Allows August Smart Locks And SmartThings To Work Together Without Hub
It is great to hear that August is continuing to be the best and the most compatible smart locks in the market. The company recently announced integration with the Samsung SmartThings home automation platform. Previously, users were able to connect their August door lock via Z-Wave to SmartThings, but with this release, it could be done with direct integration. The August Smart Lock Pro will integrate directly with the SmartThings app and will not require the hub at all from January 2020 onwards.
Plus, all of Yale’s Connected by August locks (Assure Lock SL, Assure Lock Touchscreen and Assure Lever) are also directly compatible via Wi-Fi and the included August Connect module.
It looks like any August powered-lock could be paired via the SmartThings’ new integration framework. This is a good move since there is no dependency on the hub and the entire system leans towards a cloud-based approach. Amazon and Google are working on similar ideas as well. This is pretty similar to Apple HomeKit which can work via the Home app and does not need the hub at all unless you want remote control.
