Look Ma, No Hands! Control Your TV And More With Alexa
Alexa has taken a step further in home automation by providing hands-free TV viewing and control via the Smart Home Skills from Sony, Logitech Harmony and BroadLink. These companies have deployed an updated Smart Home Skill API to enable hands-free control of TV and media player. This API is already integrated with Alexa’s standardized language model. Alexa will convert the user’s speech into a command and transmit it to the skill adapter of the device to be controlled.
For consumers, this means accessibility and convenience without the need of physical remote control. Once can just say “Alexa, turn on/off the TV”, “Alexa, fast forward/rewind/pause”, “Alexa, make it louder/softer” or “Alexa, switch input to Blu-Ray”. This is not the first time Alexa has been deployed for these applications. Amazon’s own Fire TV platform uses Alexa to tune into Netflix, play TV shows and movies.
The big picture here is that Alexa is becoming an ever more centralized point of control for interacting with the smart home. But it’s also expanding beyond what some consider to be the more superfluous, geeky aspect of using smart home devices – like video doorbells or colorful, dimmable light bulbs – to instead control a more commonly used device: your TV.
