Looks Like Apple HomeKit Is Better Than We Expected. Now What?
Alexa and Google Assistant are definitely leading the way in the voice assistant sector. However, that alone is not any measure of a home’s capability.
Apple’s HomeKit platform has cast a vision of the smart home that is uniquely different from Amazon’s and Google’s: it’s a vision less concerned with capturing coverage and racing for countertop real estate, and more concerned with reliability and security.
Some issues with the HomeKit are its price tag, its closed-garden approach to partnerships, and artificially degrading its own hardware. On the other hand, Google and Amazon ecosystems are cheaper, easier to operate, and can be used with third-party devices.
On the brighter side, the HomeKit has a lot of positives too, making it stand out. The app is really well designed and involves no scrolling. Most activities can be done in a single or double-tap.
For everyday use, there is not a lot of difference between Google Home, Amazon Echo, and Apple HomeKit. The main difference is consistency and reliability. Again, while Google and Amazon talk about integrations with hundreds of companies, the HomeKit quietly offers integrations with most top brands out there.
While Apple does not have a budget version, it does seem to be slowly becoming more attractive, especially thanks to its sturdy security provisions.
