Microsoft’s Newest “Smart” Patent Will Embed Touch Sensors On Fabric Surfaces. Does This Mean We Might Have Smart Clothes, Or Even Furniture? Or Maybe Just Higher Quality Smart Devices.
A new patent by Microsoft titled, “Forming Touch Sensor on Fabric”, indicates significant improvements, exploring methods of embedding touch sensors into fabric surfaces.
The distinctive feature with the Windows Surface Pro was the Alcantara fabric used on the keyboards. It feels like suede to touch and is Italian-made. It is also used in automotive and aviation industries in addition to on keyboards and in fashion.
Microsoft is working on identifying new materials and ideas that can develop new touch-sensitive surface. The new process makes use of conductive ink and a thin, dielectric structure attached to the fabric.
The company wants to introduce the touch-sensitive fabric into its devices. They are also hoping to bring it to furniture. The material can be set up so that it can communicate with the IoT devices or apps and even understand and respond to gestures. So far, it is just a patent.
