Although smart home devices offer a lot of advantages to the consumers, many are always concerned about the fact that it could be listening in on your private conversations. In a survey with 2,075 US respondents, most users mentioned their top concern with smart devices was the privacy issue.
A majority – 68 percent of respondents said they believe smart home devices listen to you when you aren’t aware and share the data with the companies behind the products, such as Amazon, Google, or even Facebook for those who bought a Portal. About 32% don’t believe that smart devices listen to them.
Amazon has employed thousands of people to listen to Alexa recordings and feed whatever learned back to the Alexa software.
Amazon says this happens only with a small percentage of recordings to “improve the customer experience.”
Smart home assistants like Google Home and Alexa are supposed to start listening only when they hear the trigger word. However, that does not always happen. To protect yourself, you can always disable active listening on your voice assistant.
