New APIs Make Aibo, Sony’s Robot Dog, A Great Smart Assistant
Sony says you can now use a web-based API to program its adorable Aibo robot dog to do new tricks — and you might even be able to make it your smart home’s best friend.
Sony’s aibo Developer Program is inviting developers to create apps and services that would be compatible with Aibo. Aibo can potentially switch on a robot vacuum cleaner, work as a surveillance camera, turn on a microwave, and even remind a child that they left an appliance on. Aibo Visual Programming allows you to use Scratch’s drag-and-drop block coding with which you can better program Aibo.
You can only teach it to do new things or tricks, but you cannot change its mood or emotions. That shouldn’t be a problem anyway since it seems to be a very good-tempered dog! When a developer executes a program, Aibo gets to choose which behavior will go with the task based on his or her psychological state. You can now train Aibo to be quiet, feed via the My Aibo app, and do lots more.
