Scientists found that one type of material developed for next-generation solar panels could be repurposed to harvest ambient light generated indoors by lightbulbs.
However, the conventional solar panels available in the market now do not have that capability. The new solar panels have perovskite-inspired materials which can absorb indoor lighting effectively from any source and convert that into energy which can be used to power other devices. The only disadvantage of this material is that it is not as efficient at absorbing sunlight as the traditional solar panels.
With the increase in demand for smart home devices, it is important to find economical and environmentally friendly ways to power these devices. Lights are commonly available at all places and this research can prove to be economical in the long run. The scientists are further trying to improve the performance of these materials to generate better output from indoor lighting.
