Privacy Concerns Just One Reason Amazon’s Facial Recognition Software Is Under Scrutiny In The U.S. Congress And Public Eye
The public and the government alike have concerns about Rekognition, Amazon’s facial recognition software. It is currently being used by law enforcement and other government bodies. One issue with this is if the technology becomes part of the law and other such areas, people may not be comfortable using it at their homes.
Google is also in the race and has released its first facial recognition smart display device – Google’s Nest Hub Max. Last year, Amazon came up with Alexa Hunches, a means to share customized results. Amazon’s Lab126 and Alexa team are working on developing a wearable device that can detect emotions using voice sentiment analysis.
Amazon said that it will first work with emotion detection before working with other feelings. Personalization is used to show you videos, appointments, news, and so on. Face Match biometric authentication may be used as verification for purchases. However, the facial recognition software is under a lot of scrutiny, along with Amazon’s Ring Video Doorbells.
Ocascio-Cortez may paint all five tech giants with the same brush, but people draw a distinction between companies selling facial recognition to law enforcement and ICE and companies using facial recognition to sell goods or personalize smart display results.
Google’s facial recognition received backlash as well, but so far it is not working with the ICE or police.
