Privacy Issues Will Be An Ongoing Concern When Creating A Smarter Home
To many, The Internet of Things (IoT), is about a smart home with connected devices and remote automation. No doubt it has made life easier but at what cost? How safe are we in this era of technology?
Interconnected devices and systems, once a fairy tale, are now fairly common. It is not very easy though, to set up an interconnected home where each device works smoothly with another, in spite of being manufactured by different companies.
The privacy issues with these devices were noted in the investigations. The devices need some basic information or details in order to be able to serve better but the term “but not limited to” is used by the companies far more times than expected.
In the testing of twelve products, each one had a few privacy issues. But voice-activated smart assistants seemed to raise the red-flag the most.
This is due, among other things, to concerns the fear of oversharing of data by commercial services, insufficient protection of stored personal data, and the possibility of interception of digital traffic by cybercriminals or the mischievous.
Though no system can be fully secure to potential threats, making a safe smart home does seem possible when done with caution.
