Research Shows That There Really Isn’t A Smart Device Backlash. But Why Do We Think There Is?
While there have been many movies, talks, and books portraying a tech backlash, it doesn’t seem to be true. Research tells us that we are as addicted to our devices as before. For instance, Facebook is in the middle of several data breach incidents, but still the number of actively used Facebook accounts have only increased.
Facebook is not the only demonized tech platform; social media companies, in general, are routinely criticized as toxic swamps full of trolls, liars and bots.
But again, there’s no evidence of any exodus. Twitter has reported five million new daily users and Snapchat app has a 7% user increase. Even smart speakers that have been involved in scandals for listening in when they shouldn’t be are seeing a definite increase in sale.
Besides voice assistant and smart devices, wearables are growing in popularity too. With the ability to integrate your wearables with other smart home devices, users are following the trend of increased convenience and coolness. Now, the question is that why is there no tech backlash? It could be due to complex tech, lack of interest in reading the entire terms and conditions, and the fact that some prefer definite convenience over a vague possibility of privacy issue.
