Samsung’s AI Research Will Concentrate On Health And Communication In Cambridge Lab
Samsung is planning to set up, in Cambridge, an AI research lab which is appreciated by the Prime Minister. Samsung has other labs devoted to this subject located in Toronto and Moscow. The company is facing issues with the skills shortage. The lab will concentrate on health and communication.
It is being said that the new center will be hiring about 150 scientists though Samsung is being quite tight-lipped about its plans. The center will be led by Andrew Blake who previously led Microsoft’s research lab in Cambridge.
Bixby smart assistant is an example of Samsung’s use of AI. The company plans to have AI technology on all its products by the year 2020. Unfortunately, it looks like finding the perfect skills in the UK is quite a task. Samsung is looking for people on a global basis.
A distinguished academic in the AI field confirmed this to me – he said anyone who had done post-graduate research in machine learning could “name their price”. The competition is fierce, with much of the academic talent already swallowed up by Google’s DeepMind, whose London office now houses more than 700 people. That workforce comes from across Europe and the rest of the world.
