Smart motion sensors are great for added convenience and security. Use them to turn on lights when you enter your garage or laundry room. Receive text alerts if there is an uninvited guest or set them up to sound an alarm. Both D-Link and Insteon are trusted smart brands but we detect one of these sensors may be better than the other.
D-Link mydlink Wi Fi Motion Sensor or Insteon Motion Sensors? Which is the better smart sensor?
Automation is now becoming a daily part of our life. One of the many things possible to automate would be to add such motion sensors in your smart home. Have you ever thought that it would be cool if the light could turn on when you enter your room automatically and turn off once you are away? This is possible thanks to motion sensors. There are a number of motion sensors in the market today.
You have to ensure that you choose the right product which suits you the best. We will talk about D-Link mydlink Wi-Fi Motion Sensor and Insteon Motion Sensors. These two products have been living up to the expectations of the users. Let’s walk past all the details which would give you a clear picture.
What is the D-Link mydlink Wi-Fi Motion Sensor?
With a really competitive price tag, this D-Link Sensor can do wonders if set up properly. It can be used in multiple ways, such as connecting it to the cameras, starting/stopping the recording in case of motion/no motion, or connecting it to a smart plug so that the plug can be controlled in a predefined manner.
It has to be configured via the iPhone/Android app. The device is capable of detecting motion up to 26 feet away with a sensor angle of horizontal 100 degrees and vertical 80 degrees. You may also configure to receive push notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
Unfortunately, the set-up of this device certainly does not seem to be simple. For a non-tech savvy person, this would take hours to set up. The instructions in the box are not very clear. But once the set-up is complete, this gadget is great.

“Super easy to install, and it is more reliable than a camera motion trigger. Nice addition to my home surveilance system.” - By Rod on March 20, 2017
“Final piece to our baby room monitoring arrived today. As with other dlink products (wireless babycam and smart plug) setup was a breeze. Downloaded mydlinkHome app and was quickly able to add devices and love how it will send me notifications when motion is detected. I found that the range of detection was good and love the fact that I can adjust the sensors sensitivity.” - By Derek on July 10, 2014
“My dad (>75) lives alone, hundreds of miles away from me. I talk to him most days, but bought this for peace of mind on days when I don't speak with him.” - By Laurence on June 16, 2018
What is the Insteon Wireless Motion Sensor?
One of the few devices which can be compared to the D-Link Motion Sensor is the Insteon’s sensors. With an almost similar price tag, this Insteon Sensor can be tagged to switches, outlets, and plugs without an app or a hub. But just in case you want to utilize this to its maximum potential, you will need to buy an Insteon Hub using the mobile app. This would allow you to turn this device into an alert system by pushing notifications on the phone.
An advantage of Insteon Motion Sensors are that they are self-powered with a battery that comes included with the package. It can also be powered using a Micro USB cable for always-on powering. It can detect motion up to 30 feet away with a 90-degree angle.
Unfortunately, the wall mount is not as flexible as hoped to assist you with covering a particular area. Insteon has also created a dependency by ensuring that the device can work to its maximum only using the Insteon Hub which might be an additional cost.

So, What’s The Verdict? Who Won The Smart Home Battle Between The D-Link mydlink Wi Fi Motion Sensor And Insteon Motion Sensors?
The D-Link mydlink WiFi Motion Sensor is a compact smart device with lots of options for scheduling. If you are interested in a standalone motion sensor for you home the D-Link mydlink WiFi Motion Sensor is your best bet. Pairing with the D-Link Smart Plug makes it easy to trigger lights or video recording for motion security. Or combine it with the D-Link WiFi Siren for an audio alarm.
For greater smart motion security the Insteon Motion Sensor gives you full control. Unfortunately, in order to fully utilize all of the features of the Insteon Motion Sensor you must also have the Insteon Hub. But with the hub you are able to activate lights, appliances, and scenes based on motion. If security is your concern, an Insteon system with motion sensor attached can send you a message, turn on the lights, and even take pictures any time motion is detected.
