Smart Home Devices Are Stopping Suddenly? What Is Happening?
According to the latest security report, it appears that there might be a point in time when smart home devices stop working all of a sudden, causing a worldwide outage. All this can be attributed to the security certificates that the devices are using.
For an appliance to connect to a web server, the device must use an encrypted connection for this communication.
These certificates, normally known as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates, have expiration dates set on them and once they expire, they do not allow any devices to authenticate with the server.
Roku users have already been through this experience with multiple users reporting that a few streaming channels were not working as expected. This was due to the root certificate that had expired. Users were forced to upgrade their devices. Users must install the latest updates as and when the manufacturer releases them. This is a joint effort from both the company and the consumer to ensure that such small security lapses are prevented before becoming a worldwide outage.
