Smart Smoke Detectors Get A Revamp: Giving Existing Devices A Makeover
A recent IoT Podcast episode saw a consumer ask about smart smoke detectors. There are several options available in the market that are designed to take note of the current smoke detector’s alarm and alert you. For instance, the Wyze Cam’s webcam will alert you when it hears the alarm of your standard smoke detector. Google Nest products via the Nest Aware subscription plans have a similar feature.
Google says that Nest speakers and smart displays will listen for alarm sounds and notify you of a potential fire or carbon monoxide issue if you have those detectors in your home.
To keep up with others in the market, Amazon also has a subscription-free Alexa Guard feature, working on the same idea. An alternative to this is to go a less-trodden way. Replace your traditional smoke detectors and install new “smart” ones. You can choose the ecosystem – Amazon, Apple, or Google.
If you go with Amazon, the Onelink Safe & Sound by First Alert is a good option while Google fans can choose to go with Nest Protect smart smoke alarms. The former detects both smoke and carbon monoxide, can interact with Alexa and comes with a high-quality built-in speaker and microphone. The Google product is cheaper but it does not have a speaker for Google Assistant to listen to verbal commands. Apple HomeKit smoke detector would be the way to go for Apple users.
