Smart Technology Enhancing The Quality Of Life For Senior Housing Community
A Petaluma senior housing nonprofit is transforming 20 units into technology-rich smart homes, equipped with voice-command devices that will enhance the quality of life for some of its most vulnerable residents.
PEP Housing is installing every residence August door locks, smart outlets and light bulbs, Nest doorbells and thermostats, and Google Chromecast. An iPad will act as the hub and the voice commands will be enabled by a Google Home smart speaker. It is hoped that aged people will find it easier to manage when all they have to do is to give commands.
The iPad project Stompe provided about 500 residents with free Wi-Fi. iPads, and training. They also started a partnership with the Petaluma City Schools where they paired students with seniors that let the students assist with chores and also teach them how to use tablets.
The August door lock opens automatically when the resident comes within the range. It locks on its own after 15 seconds. The Nest doorbell uses a motion sensor that enables the HD camera which sends a live feed to a smartphone. Google Chromecast streams Netflix and Hulu with just your voice commands. These are great for the elderly who do not need to physically stress themselves out.
