Sustainability And Technological Advances Showcased At The LEED Platinum Home Depot Smart Home
Mark Younger, a Duke alum, visited the Duke Smart Home during the 10th anniversary. He expected to see former and current student residents along with some members of the faculty. However, he saw all the people who were benefitted by this initiative. Public tours are free. Private tours are also held. They are open to anyone interested in learning more about the Duke Smart Home Program.
The idea for this home took root when Younger himself was a student. He imagined a place where the students live together and sustainability and technological advances are showcased while assisting the students to dream bigger. The LEED Platinum Home Depot Smart Home is 6,000-square foot large and has a state-of-the-art media room, solar panels, and two labs.
There are both high-tech and low-tech things available here. Energy Recovery Ventilator decreases the heating energy by warming the air going in via the HVAC system. Another system filters rainwater for toilet and laundry.
The Duke Smart Home Club offers resources, grants, and guidance to the students.
From efficient and inexpensive shelters for refugee camps to wearable sensors to help monitor the strides of runners, the program has become an incubator for students’ worthy ideas.
