The Future Of Renewable Solar Energy Will Be In (And On) Your Smart Home
Home of the Future is a six-episode video series produced by Curbed and The Verge that documents the building of a prefab house in Texas. It is designed and built with state-of-the-art technology, new innovative ideas, and sustainability as a main factor. California will need solar panels on all the newly built homes by 2020. Home of the Future followed suit.
After the last episode, they have built a two-bedroom prefab house. The next step is to figure out how to sustainably power it. Solar seems to be the most cost-effective renewable energy available today.
For our Home of the Future, the solar panels are the roof—of the carport attached to the main volume—functioning as structure and power source while showing passersby how sustainability can be built right into a home.
Lighthouse Solar is an Austin-based company that produces energy to power about 60% of our needs at home. The unused energy is stored for later use in a lithium-ion battery. However, the lesser energy used, lesser power will need to be generated.
