The Time Is Now For Apple To Embrace The Smart Home Race
Apple needs to do better in the smart home market. At CES 2018, Google and Amazon ruled the smart home area. Many hoped that Apple would launch something worthwhile at the recently held Apple’s WorldWide Developers Conference. Unfortunately, they announced a few updates to HomePod and HomeKit.
Siri now has a Shortcuts feature that also works on the HomePod, and macOS Mojave will feature a Home app that will allow you to control your HomeKit enabled devices on your Mac computer.
Apple needs to put in a lot of effort to match Google and Amazon. Google Home speakers are compatible with over 5,000 smart devices while the HomeKit is compatible with only around 250. It also does not integrate with other products, make calls, or recognize the voice of multiple users. On the other hand, Alexa boasts of having over 30,000 skills.
HomePod has too many flaws to deal with. The company needs to create cheaper speakers as Amazon and Google offer better speakers with more functionality for half the price of what Apple sells. Integrating with platforms outside Apple could prove to be a turning point for the company as well.
