We Are Relying On Our Voice Assistants More Than Ever As We Fear To Touch Any Surface
Voice technology is gaining attention as the world moves away from touch feedback. Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri are voice-activated systems and have gained popularity over the last few years. They can be used to answer questions, manage your smart home, and even as a business assistant.
“Voice has already made significant inroads into the smart home space and voice control can mean avoiding commonly touched surfaces around the home from smartphones, to TV remotes, light switches, thermostats, door handles and more,” said analyst Jonathan Collins of ABI Research.
The pandemic is a reason for seeing a stronger push in using voice control than the usual touch. Collins believes that adoption is expected to increase in devices like smart doorbells and locks among other things. Any smart device that can reduce personal contact and face-to-face interaction could be seen as a boon.
While hospitals have already started using voice technology and smart home devices to deal with the situation, other industries are likely to soon adopt them as well. Companies are also working to improve speech recognition technologies. Veton Kepuska, a computer engineering professor, is working to develop voice-activated medical robots that can assist in taking care of the patients and contain the issue.
