When The IoT Is Optimized For Trust There Will Be More Innovation And Adoption Of Smart Devices
IoT has been successful thanks to its ability to perform multiple things and trust is always an important attribute. IoT can be extremely useful in the area of advertising and while trust is more important than clicks, trust is also more important than a host of other things, including cost, reliability, and bandwidth usage.
There are many compelling reasons for this. The top one being the fact that most IoT devices don’t keep the data collected carefully and as much as 90% of data transactions are not encrypted. Also, since many IoT devices are connected to the company’s general network, these devices may be easily compromised if that network is penetrated.
The ownership of this data can raise trust issues. This apparent lack of trust is what is pushing lawmakers to create new privacy laws for smart speakers.
The trust issues get even trickier when you consider that Amazon reportedly considered letting Alexa listen to users even without a wake word like “Alexa” or “computer,” and is reportedly working on wearable devices designed to read human emotions from listening to your voice.
One way to combat this would be to understand that trust is a major element. For instance, Amazon recently came up with a new command: “Delete what I said today.” Initiatives like this can go a long way in establishing trust.
