Where Smart Home Apps Gone Wrong?
Designers misjudge how valuable the intuitive factor of a smart home app is. Let’s look at some of the issues that most of us face with our smart home apps. The first thing that pops into our mind is that the app is not really developed for the masses. The apps we currently have are not very intuitive and the older generation would find it quite difficult to navigate it. The fact that these smart home apps are designed for installers make it hard for regular users to use. Smart thermostats often have trouble in this regard.
There is no denying that there are many ecosystems in work today.
But the reason those have not entirely taken off is that users often still need to setup each device with its primary app before authenticating their account to the ecosystem.
Google Assistant is already taking steps to make it work with Seamless setup and Alexa will follow suit soon. However, unless all voice actions and skills covered, it does not really solve the issue. The first thing developers need to focus on is to offer a simple onboarding experience. This would allow the user to get acquainted with the app and use it better.
