Why Are Home Builders Abandoning Nest After Google’s Changes?
There is a huge gap between what the manufacturers think about smart home products and what the users want. Manufacturers easily support for older products while releasing new models all the time. Vendors, on the other hand, are after ecosystem lock-in. Amidst all this, users want interoperability and a long-life cycle. Many home contractors have stopped using Google Nest products due to recent changes.
Nest users could make a one-way transition to the Works With Google Assistant (WWGA) program instead — but this meant giving up a lot of WWN functionality and the ability to integrate with third-party products that belonged to that system.
Google recently announced a Device Access security program. Other updates include allowing users to create own automated actions and trigger a routine. According to the company, all these updates are for improving end-user privacy, but not many users are buying it. Builders are not very happy about the changes either. Nest is not a great option since it does not promote interoperability. Due to this, Google is rapidly losing the market to Amazon’s smart devices.
