Why Did Wink Hub Switch To A Subscription Model?
From May 20, your Wink Hub can no longer be used unless you are willing to join the subscription, regardless of when you purchased it.
Wink Hub was designed to bridge the massive technology gap that exists between smart home devices. It was, basically, supposed to be the savior of the smart home, creating a platform-agnostic way to connect everything that you love together.
However, that was not to happen. It is very expensive to maintain a service as huge as Wink’s and the fact that they have to pay for the servers too. Its business model is just too unprofitable for them to continue the same way. Instead of going out of business, the company decided to start a subscription model.
Another challenge is the fact that smart home devices cannot be used like our other devices or products since it is necessary that they stay up-to-date to offer reliable security. Another trouble is that with so many free apps out there, users don’t like to pay for the services of an app. One major factor at play here is that Wink takes care of consumer data excellently and does not sell them to make money like Google, Facebook, or Amazon. Looking at all this, it is understandable that Wink had to do what it did. While you can always choose to go with another platform, Wink Hub is an all-inclusive hub for all your devices, and you can be at peace about your privacy.
