Will We Embrace Smart Mirrors?
Future Tense is a partnership between New America, Slate, and Arizona State University. They examine public policy, emerging technologies, and society.
Embrace Smart Mirror is a large wall mirror that works as a touch-screen Android device. Wi-Fi connections and Bluetooth keeps you connected to your websites and apps. This basically helps you turn the mirror in the bathroom into your device’s screen and you can toggle back and forth.
The smart mirror is integrated with Google’s smart assistant. The connected speakers let you play music as well. Another great thing about this is that it is splashproof. This mirror was developed in Australia and ships for free. It comes with a 12-month warranty. However, it looks like this idea of having a mirror as a central console is not very appealing as no one would want to go all the way to the mirror to give commands which could be easily given via your smartphone.
This mirror is a prototype smart object that is admittedly vulnerable to bugs and crashes and has a camera. Shoshitaishvili noted that while the Android framework on which the mirror is built has its roots in open-source software, many of the proprietary applications that run on Android are not open-source products.
