With More And More Smart Devices What We Really Need Are Fully Integrated Smart Home Hubs
Smart devices do make a good clutter in every house. Ideally, there should be more combination devices for smart homes that integrate these features. The best place to start would be to add some radios in the mesh router systems so that they work as hubs as well. A router can also sometimes work as a smart home hub. Almond offers one such option. Samsung Connect, released in 2017, has a mesh network system in many configurations.
Samsung setups have Zigbee and Z-Wave radios along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Samsung SmartThings software. Samsung Connect AC1300 Wi-Fi unit costs about $130. The same unit with mesh extenders costs $300. Samsung AC2600 costs $200 and offers more bandwidth. TP-Link recently talked about a tri-band mesh network system.
The Wink Hub 2 works with Wi-Fi and hence, does not require a hardwired connection to the home router. But there isn’t a router with Wink hub functionality built in. Or with support for Fibaro, WeMo, Nest or even HomeKit, for that matter.
It would be great to see Wink and others integrate their hubs with routers. It would be highly useful.
