A Win-Win! Illinois Program Pays Students To Install Smart Devices For Seniors
In the state of Illinois, there is a program that is aimed at helping the older adults install new energy-saving technology and at the same time, provide job training for high school students. Though this program was slated to start early January 2020, the pandemic has delayed things. As an alternative, the program is developing DIY videos which will help the consumers to install their products.
Once the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided, the pilot program will resume as originally planned.
If the pilot program is found to be successful, it will then be expanded to the neighboring states. About 6 non-residential nonprofit centers for independent living are participating in conjunction with 20-25 schools consisting of close to 240 students. These students will be fully trained by the program to enable them to help prospective consumers, mostly over the age of 65 to set up smart home devices. Students will also be receiving a stipend of $15 for each successful 2-hour home visit. With the pandemic, the model is being tracked closely on when the pilot can resume safely.
