Amazon’s Sidewalk Network To Be Switched On By Default. It Is Easy To Turn Off.
Amazon recently announced that Sidewalk will be turned on by default on their devices. Sidewalk is a mesh network that uses Bluetooth technology and 900MHz radio signals to communicate with other devices in the area. The main aim of creating the Sidewalk technology was to enable smart home devices to communicate with each other without a reliable Wi-Fi connection. This will ensure that all the devices are connected regardless of connectivity to the internet. In case your internet connection is down, the smart devices can be connected to a nearby neighborhood device that is connected to the internet, even if they are not in your home.
Though Amazon has promised that multiple layers of security are added to ensure privacy, many users are reluctant to turn this feature on.
Still, opt-out is a really bad way to operate, especially when it comes to things that connect all of the devices in your neighborhood to a mesh network.
You will be able to opt-out of Sidewalk using the Alexa app under the Account Settings option. Once you set that to disable, it will apply to all your devices on the account.
