Are We Making Strides In Teaching AI-Powered Devices Common-Sense Reasoning?
Machine intelligence has come a long way. So much so that it is not at all unlikely to have your virtual assistant be both humanely compassionate while the AI side of things kick in with the logic.
Machine intelligence like this wouldn’t merely do pattern recognition, but would need to have a true understanding of what’s going on. Is such a level of cognition woven into our everyday technology feasible?
Enter Nasrin Mostafazadeh, a 30 Under 30 2019 Science awardee. Her research is all about building AI that can learn language and understand storytelling in a new way. Common sense and cognitive ability are especially important for having a natural conversation.
Mostafazadeh says that smart devices will have the cognitive ability of a five-year old by the year 2028. The system would know when something important occurs, such as an injury or bad/good news and it would respond accordingly.
Systems that can understand children’s story will eventually grow with time and build its own knowledge base. These stories could help the system understand what has happened and based on that, it could then try to make a prediction. In today’s AI, common sense is not very a strong point. Nasrin Mostafazadeh is working towards changing that.
