California Law Regarding IoT Privacy And Security Focused On The Manufacturing Of Smart Devices
The state of California approved the bill regarding the privacy and security issues with the smart devices or in the IoT sector. The law is aimed at regulating the use and protection of the data collected by the smart devices. Smart devices have been wildly successful. While they lend convenience to the users, the manufacturers benefit from the data their devices collect which helps them in improving their product.
This convenience is what that leads to risks for the users as the smart devices function only with their connection to the internet. It also depends on the type of sensor, their quality, and the data thus obtained. It is difficult to manually change the settings for IoT devices which leads to cybersecurity and privacy violation issues. The manufacturers usually do just enough to satisfy the legal requirements, which is not actually enough to stop the negative elements. The cybercriminals can use the data collected by the sensors to plan a big heist or fraud.
With more and more examples of violation coming up, it is time the manufacturers do something. Transparency, consent, and minimization are the three basic steps they should follow.
IoT devices shall be protected by the technical measures, such as safe connections, firewalls, and passwords.
